Course Description

Who were the ancient Greeks, and why is their culture worth studying today? This course examines ancient Greek culture from prehistory to the second century CE. Students will survey the practices, beliefs, institutions, art, and literature of Greek antiquity, as we seek to situate them in their particular cultural context and against the backdrop of other cultures, ancient and modern. Readings include selections from Homer, Sappho, Euripides, Aristophanes, Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Lysias, Plutarch, and Longus.
