"Towards a Study of Identity: Late Classical Olynthos (Greece) and Beyond"
During the earlier fourth century BCE the city of Olynthos, in northern Greece, sustained political and economic relationships both with Athens, and also with the kingdom of Macedon (by which Olynthos was ultimately destroyed in 348 BCE). In this talk I explore how recent collaborative archaeological work at the city by the Olynthos Project enables us to study some of the ways in which its inhabitants constructed their cultural identities as their community attempted to maintain its position between these two larger regional powers.
