Prof. Christina I. Illias

Bloomington - Prof. Christina Ioana Illias passed away in Bloomington, Indiana at the age of 77 on October 15, 2021. She is survived by her husband, Lukey and their son, Andrei. Christina was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1944 and subsequently immigrated to the United States in 1980. She earned a Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1994 and served as an Associate Professor of Classical Studies and Romanian Language until her retirement from active teaching in 2019 due to health complications from a serious spinal cord injury. Christina was the author of several published works and literary translations, and received multiple "excellence in teaching" awards during her tenure at Indiana University. She was also recognized with the Romanian National Order for "Faithful Service" in 2000 for her ongoing contributions to Romanian language, history and culture. Visitation is scheduled between 4pm and 7pm on Thursday, 21 October at the Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E. Third St; Bloomington.
