“Legal perspectives on same-sex relationships in ancient Rome”
The lecture will focus on juridical issues regarding ancient Romans’ legal perspectives on same-sex relationships. In the first half I will explore the problems of the compatibility of the modern dogmatic categories of sexuality and sexual identity with the social and juridical environment of ancient Rome. In the second half some more specific legal cases coming from Republican Rome will be examined, in order to draw (at least) an outline for a better understanding of the subject, with (few) further references to Imperial Rome.
