Department of Classical Studies

My research interests center on the transmission of classical thought; from philosophical education's role in the politics of Periclean Athens and the early Roman Empire, to its later reception in Renaissance humanism and German Idealism. I'm also interested in the material history of trade in the later Roman Empire, including how economic networks carried musical and cultural exchange across the Mediterranean.
